BBC Caribbean: Tropical Storm Arthur Starts the 2008 Atlantic Hurricane Season with A Smash

Forming a day before the official start of the season, the weak tropical storm quickly made landfall over the Belize-Mexico border, packing winds of around 40mph (64kph).

For the first time in its 35 year history, the Caribbean Community will come together on 13 September 2008 to mobilize its citizens – young and old – to engage in activities that will promote and sustain healthy lifestyles, in what will be the initial observance of Caribbean Wellness Day.

As the TCI’s Minister of Health and Human Services Hon. Lilian Boyce has launched a Healthy Lifestyles campaign, Turks and Caicos Islands residents hope to participate in a number of events that will assist them in improving their wellness on this day.

“Consequently we are seeking to develop indigenous sources and fuel substitution in the generation of electricity and transportation fuels. The use of biomass for energy generation is one area that is under active consideration. However our aim is to ensure that such biomass use is sustainable and does not adversely effect domestic food production,” [Prime Minister Denzil DOuglas] Douglas told the several Heads of State, Heads of Government, Ministers and experts.

The Turks and Caicos Islands recently hosted the 10th Annual Sustainable Sustainable Tourism Conference.
